Welcome To Deming, NM

Deming is a pretty little town located on Interstate 10 across the southern United States. We are a farming-ranching community. I have some pictures that may help you decide if you want to spend your vacation or just stop for lunch in our great little town. Deming is the perfect small town. Friendly people, low taxes, pure water, clean air, no traffic problems yet. We retired here and are so glad that we did.

Columbus, NM site of the last raid on the U.S.. by a foreign country. 1916 Pancho Villa and his Vallistas attacked the soldiers and citizens of Columbus, NM. 18 U.S. Citizens lost their lives and over 200 Villistas.Gen Sherman chased him back into Mexico. Several Vallistas were hanged in Deming in front of the Luna County Courthouse. (see drawing below).

Every year "Raid Day" celebrates the event with folks from both sides of the border participating.

Women and children hid in the Hoover Hotel (top center adobe bldg.), which had 12in. adobe walls. This Hotel has been restored and is open to the public. Columbus Day, is held the 2nd Saturday in October, and Raid Day is celebrated on March 9th every year.

Border patrol/customs..Aerostat at Deming. This is a tethered radar balloon which monitors the air for illegal aircraft entering the country. The Aerostat program works with other federal drug enforcement agencies in the interdiction of drug trafficing across our borders. High winds and bad weather often ground these balloons. This picture is of a grounded Aerostat Balloon. When they are in the air, they are pretty.

Ballooning is popular here!......

Misc. pictures of our area. These balloons are from our Balloon Rally during the GADR in August.

Well, you just can't mention Deming without talking about the green chile that grows here. Our area is surrounded by fields of Green chile. They are roasted outside late summer and the aroma is wonderful. Some Chiles are left on the vine to dry and are harvested in October as Red Chiles. We put about 40 lbs of green chile in our freezer every year and it still isn't enough. I usually raise my own Jalapenos and Habaneros. The world's largest Chile processor is about 5 miles from our place.: Border Foods, Inc. They use the Chiles in many ways to make great tasty products..Other products grown here are Jalapenos, Cotton ( high grade), Sorghum, Pinto Beans, Watermelon, Cantaloupe and Pecans, Lettuce, Onions, Garlic, and many other crops, including alfalfa, wheat, and other grains. Everything grows well here because of our long hot summers. Of course because we are in a desert, irrigation pumps can be heard when driving near the fields. We have several more large produce packing companies in Deming as agriculture is a major industry. We are a farming and ranching community. Border Foods is currently growing and adding an additional 200,000 sq.ft. to their Deming plant.

Things that are near us, approximately 1 hour to 2 hours away. Good places to go visit for a change of scene!

Pronghorned Antelope in our area..and....Elk in fields - they often follow cattle for food, and can be seen grazing with cattle in winter. We saw a large herd of Antelope grazing near cattle about 15 miles north of town.

Think I will end this with a another picture of Lake Roberts, 90 minutes northeast of Deming, NM.
