USDA PLANT HARDINESS MAPS -
It is important to know what zone you live in so that you plant
at the proper time and also so you can select your plants for the
appropriate zone. For instance, I live in zone 8 which will aid
me in the kinds of plants to purchase. As far as tulips and many
bulb plants are concerned, I might as well forget it unless I
want to dig them up every year and put them in storage then put
them in the fridge for 6 weeks prior to planting, our winters are
not cold enough - long enough. Same way for many apple trees.
Some apples will grow, but the end result is a smaller version of
the fruit and the trees are not nearly as productive. So knowing
the zone you live in is necessary to selecting the kinds of trees
and flowers that you plant. Most plants that are purchased from
catalogs, have the hardiness zones printed right on the site.

This is a great source for all kinds of gardening
information as well as a good interactive Hardiness Zone map
where you can point and click your area and receive a close up
showing the absolute high and low temps for your location.
